Shabbat Reading: George Bonanno's The End of Trauma

#whatireadovershabbat George Bonanno's The End of Trauma: How the New Science of Resilience Is Changing How We Think About PTSD (Basic Books, 2021)

Traumatic experiences lead, more often than not, to long-term trauma disorders, like PTSD. The worse the experience, the deeper our mental injury. Right? Wrong. In The End of Trauma, Bonanno upends the conventional understanding of trauma, revealing that resilience, rather than disorder, is our typical response. Not only does he demonstrate how people tend to bounce back from horrific experiences, he also details the traits and behaviors that correlate with resilience trajectories. Sadly, we will all undergo traumatic stress. Bonanno’s book offers a view of trauma that may help us not just endure but overcome.
